Man who sent threat texts to Kapil Sharma arrested
MUMBAI, Sept. 28 -- A 45-year-old man from North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal has been arrested by the Mumbai crime branch for allegedly threatening comedian Kapil Sharma with death and attempting to extort Rs.1 crore.
The accused, identified as Dilip Chowdhury, was picked up after police traced his digital footprint to West Bengal. He was produced before a Mumbai court and remanded in custody till September 30. Investigators will collect his voice samples to match with the threatening messages. According to officials, the case began on September 22 when Sharma's manager received three WhatsApp voice notes from unknown numbers. (SEE BOX)
The sender claimed to represent Goldy Brar and Rohit Godara, gangsters associated with jailed criminal Lawrence Bishnoi. In the first clip, Chowdhury demanded Rs.1 crore, split between Kolkata and Mumbai, and added, "You won't require police protection after that-we will protect you." Another warned the manager not to ignore the threat, "Inform Kapil Sharma, or you will also face consequences."
On September 23, more messages followed, escalating the pressure. One said-"Our men can reach anywhere, but you can't reach us. Decide quickly, or direct action will happen."
The final note carried the most chilling warning,"You have great courage Kapil. We will kill you on live camera. Goldy has ordered no settlement now."
Alarmed, Sharma's management company, TM Ventures, lodged a complaint at Amboli police station, following which the case was handed over to the crime branch.
Senior officers said the threats were treated seriously because of the gangsters' names invoked. Goldy Brar, based in Canada, is accused of orchestrating the 2022 murder of Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala. Rohit Godara is another Bishnoi aide believed to run networks abroad. The Bishnoi gang, one of India's most feared, has previously threatened Bollywood actor Salman Khan.
Kapil Sharma too has a history of being targeted. In 2025, two incidents of firing were reported at his Kap's Cafe in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, with Bishnoi-linked gangs claiming responsibility and warning against Sharma's association with Khan. "Even if the accused had no direct gang links, the context made it important to act quickly," a crime branch officer said....
