Man swept away in swollen rivulet, over 50 border villages inundated
Hoshiarpur/Ferozepur/ Tarn Taran, Aug. 22 -- The body of a 35-year-old Baljinder Singh, who was swept away in a seasonal rivulet, was recovered near Khalwana village in Hoshiarpur on Thursday morning, police said.
Local residents said Baljinder and his two friends had gone to see the rivulet that was in spate when he slipped and fell into the gushing water. The body was retrieved with the help of divers and sent to the Hoshiarpur civil hospital.
Meanwhile, rising Sutlej sparked fears of fresh inundation in Ferozepur and Fazilka districts as 23,000 cusecs of water was released from Harike Headworks on Tuesday.
Nearly 30 villages in Ferozepur district and around 20 in Fazilka remain marooned by water, and residents, fearing that the rising water will soon enter their houses, have started moving their valuables to safer places. Medical and relief camps have also been established in affected villages, the officials added.
In Dheera Ghara village, residents waded through waist-deep waters to collect essentials, many carrying food and household items on their heads.
Ferozepur DC Deepshikha Sharma said that relief operations were being carried out promptly in all areas. Health authorities appealed to villagers to boil or chlorinate drinking water. "Chlorine tablets are being distributed door-to-door free of cost," the official said....
