man booked for duping family of Rs.7L on pretext of student visa
Haldwani, Oct. 6 -- Nainital police have registered a case against a 39-year-old man accused of extorting Rs.7 lakh from a family on the pretext of arranging a Canadian student visa, police said on Sunday.
According to the complaint by Sanjay Monga, a resident of Eco Town on Rampur Road in Haldwani, came into contact with the accused Shivam Singh, who allegedly claimed to run a consultancy firm named Shairik International and assured the family that he could secure a Canadian student visa within six to eight months for the complainant's son Harshit Monga(25), who was planning to pursue a hotel management course in Canada.
"The incident dates back to 2020. Believing him, Sanjay paid a total of Rs.7 lakh, including Rs.1 lakh borrowed from a bank. However, Shivam failed to provide either the visa or an admission offer letter. Later, he suggested he could arrange admission at Cleveland State University in the US, but that too never materialised," said Haldwani police station in-charge Amarchandra Sharma. Police said an FIR has been registered under IPC Section 420 (cheating) ."Further investigation is underway, and efforts are being made to trace and apprehend the accused," Sharma said....
