Mallikarjun Kharge reiterates support to forces, calls for Parliament session
New Delhi, June 2 -- Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday called on the BJP-led Union government to convene a Parliament session to discuss Operation Sindoor, India's military retaliation to terror attack in Pahalgam, saying that Pakistan has convened its Parliament and held discussions.
Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, the leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha took a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his public statements after the military operation and asked him to refrain from self-praise urged him to recuse himself from election campaign.
"We must know when to speak what. There should be unity in national matters and a focus on defeating our opponents. All leaders across the country should remain silent regarding matters of national security. It's better to understand what has happened before speaking about it," Kharge said.
The Congress chief further noted that several all-party delegations are currently visiting several countries to explain India's position.
"Let them come back. Till they return, it is not proper to be touring around and giving speeches. PM Modi should refrain from giving election speeches. There is no need for self-praise. The entire nation stands with our armed forces," Kharge said.
He was referring to seven multi-party Indian delegations currently travelling to 33 global capitals to reach out to the international community on Pakistan's designs and India's response to terror after the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives.
India carried out precision strikes on terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7 under Operation Sindoor, following which Pakistan attempted to attack the Indian military bases over the next three days. The Indian side responded strongly to the Pakistani actions.
He pointed out that PM Modi earlier said that he had given full authority to the armed forces, questioning as to why then he was speaking about Operation Sindoor. He reiterated his party's demand to convene a Parliament session to discuss the recent escalation of tension between India and Pakistan.
"Even Pakistan has convened its Parliament and is holding discussions. None of us will speak against the nation," the Congress leader said.
The Congress president's remarks come a day after he claimed the Union government had "misled the nation" and instead of clarifying US President Donald Trump's assertions, PM Modi "is on an election blitz, taking personal credit for the valour of the armed forces".
In a long post on X on Saturday, Kharge referred to remarks made by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) in Singapore during an interview and said there are some very important questions which need to be asked.
"These can only be asked if a Special Session of the Parliament is immediately convened. The Modi Govt has misled the nation. The fog of war is now clearing," he had alleged.
Kharge further urged PM Modi to "focus on the enemy instead of self-boasting" and to recuse himself from election campaign. "I don't like reacting to all his (Modi's) statements," Kharge said while addressing reporters in Bengaluru.
"Modi should recuse himself from elections and focus on the country. He should understand whatever has happened in the country and speak," he remarked....
