Maha women's panel chief quits over links with rape accused
Mumbai, March 21 -- Maharashtra State Commission for Women (MSCW) chairperson Rupali Chakankar on Friday resigned from her post over her association with rape-accused self-styled 'godman' Ashok Kharat.
The 47-year-old Chakanar was summoned by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis to his official residence and asked to resign as MSCW chairperson, people aware of the details said. Fadnavis issued the directive hours after NCP working president Praful Patel indicated that Chakankar would face action and a decision could be taken within a day or two.
Chakankar, a member of the Shivanika Sansthan Trust headed by Kharat, may also step down as chief of the state women's wing of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), after videos on social media purportedly showed her washing his feet, NCP insiders told HT.
Chakankar, in a post on X two days ago, had denied having any knowledge about Kharat's personal life.
The development came on a day when the special investigation team (SIT) probing the case seized more objectionable videos featuring Kharat from his personal assistant Neeraj Jadhav, who was arrested....
