Ludhiana, Dec. 17 -- The Ludhiana Central Jail superintendent, Kulwant Singh, was injured when he tried to stop a clash between two groups of inmates, officials said on Tuesday. According to officials, who didn't wish to be named, the incident occurred when two groups of inmates, who had recently been transferred to Ludhiana Central Jail from other prisons, entered into a heated argument with other prisoners over an issue. "Around 200 inmates attacked police personnel near one of the barracks. As the situation escalated, superintendent Kulwant Singh intervened to restore order. However, the inmates allegedly attacked him," the official said. Singh was reportedly struck on the head with a brick. Jail staff rushed him to hospital and alerted the police. "His condition was stated to be serious," the official added. Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma also reached the jail premises along with a heavy police force. "The process to register an FIR against the inmates involved in the assault had been initiated, and strict action would be taken against those responsible," Sharma said.
