Lucknow, July 17 -- Lucknow University vice chancellor Prof Alok Kumar Rai, 49, was named director-designate of the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta on Tuesday. Rai was a professor of marketing at Faculty of Management Studies, Banaras Hindu University, in Varanasi, and has risen rapidly through academia. In 2019, he was named vice chancellor of Lucknow University when he was just 43, making him one of the youngest to hold the position. Now comes the appointment to one of the country's top business schools. IIM Ahmedabad director Prof Bharat Bhasker said, "To the best of my knowledge, Prof. Alok Kumar Rai is perhaps the first from a state-run university who has been appointed director of an IIM.
