Low visibility causes chain collisions, no casualties reported
Greater Noida/Gurugram, Dec. 29 -- Poor visibility from dense fog caused at least two chain accidents in the national capital region (NCR) over the weekend, though no casualties were reported.
In Greater Noida, two men escaped with injuries after two cars caught fire following a chain collision involving three vehicles due to dense fog on the Yamuna Expressway late Saturday night, police said on Sunday.
The incident took place around 10:30 pm on Saturday and two vehicles caught fire.
"Both vehicles were completely gutted by the time the fire was controlled," said a police officer. Two separate accidents were also reported on the Delhi-Mathura National Highway in Faridabad late on Saturday.
At around 11pm, a speeding car lost balance, overturned multiple times and crashed into the railing near the Sector 28 Metro Station, officials privy to the matter said. Police said the driver had applied brakes while navigating a steep turn as another vehicle was overtaking him, leading to the accident.
As attempts were being made to rescue the driver trapped inside the overturned car, another car belonging to a passerby who had stopped to witness the incident, was hit from behind by another car.
All passengers survived, although with minor injuries.
An unidentified cyclist was killed after being run over by a speeding truck in Sector 9 on Sunday morning, police said. The cyclist was riding along the roadside when the truck hit him during the early hours. The driver fled the scene, abandoning the truck. "The cyclist came under the truck's wheel, sustaining severe injuries and bleeding profusely. He died on the spot," said a senior official at the Sector 9A police station, requesting anonymity.
The body was shifted for post-mortem under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita. Preliminary investigations indicated the truck was travelling at high speed. "We are trying to ascertain the identity of the victim. His photograph has been circulated in nearby police stations," the official said.
