Landslides: Mandi-Manali highway blocked at multiple points
Dharamshala, July 17 -- : Traffic movement on the Chandigarh-Manali National Highway was blocked on Wednesday evening due to fresh landslides in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh.
Officials said the highway has been blocked at multiple points, including the 4-mile mark, 9-mile mark, Kainchi Mod, and Dwara. "Light motor vehicles are being diverted via the Kamand bypass," officials added.
Earlier this week, traffic on the Mandi-Kullu stretch of the highway was disrupted on Monday following a landslide near the 4-mile mark. Prior to that, a landslide on Saturday had blocked the highway for over 24 hours.
Meanwhile, a major landslide occurred near Shillai town in Sirmaur district on Wednesday, blocking the Hatkoti-Paonta Sahib stretch of National Highway (NH) 707, officials said.
Hours after a huge part of the hillside came crashing down, restoration efforts began but debris falling from the hillside obstructed work, they said.
Besides, 201 roads remained blocked in Himachal on Wednesday including 140 roads blocked in Mandi district alone, followed by 27 roads blocked in Sirmaur district. Moreover, 137 water supply schemes also remained disrupted in the state.
With rainfall activity to continue in parts of Himachal Pradesh in coming days, the India meteorological department's (IMD) Shimla office has sounded a yellow alert of heavy rainfall in several districts from July 17 to 20.
A yellow alert has been issued for Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu and Mandi districts for Thursday (July 17), followed by a yellow alert in Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi and Sirmaur districts on July 18. Four districts of the state will be under an alert of heavy rainfall on July 19.
According to MeT department officials, light to moderate rainfall is very likely at most places on July 17, 18, 19, 21 and 22, and at many places on July 20. While one or two spells of heavy rain are also expected at isolated places till July 20, one or two spells of heavy to very heavy rainfall are likely at isolated places on July 21 and 22.
The weather office said that the monsoon activity was normal over the state during the last 24 hours, and light to moderate rain was observed at many places over the state.
The highest rainfall of 4 cm was recorded in Kothi, followed by Sangrah (4 cm), Dadahu (3 cm), Pachhad (3 cm), Nahan (2 cm), Bharmour (2 cm), Manali (2 cm), Karsog (2 cm), Rohru (1 cm), Jogindarnagar (1 cm) and Kataula (1 cm)....
