Haridwar, Aug. 11 -- A 19-year-old man, alleged to be the key accused in connection with the gang rape of a 14-year-old girl, was arrested in Haridwar district on Sunday, a police officer said. SSP Pramendra Dobhal said a joint team of police and the crime investigation unit conducted several raids and used mobile surveillance, CCTV footage and manual investigation to trace the three accused. "The main accused was arrested from Pathri railway station premises on Sunday. Raids are on to nab the other two accused," Dobhal said. Police quoted the locals as saying that on Saturday night, a man was seen forcibly taking the teenager on a motorcycle to a secluded house near a factory. By the time locals reached the spot, the accused had reportedly gang raped her. Seeing people coming, they threw the girl from the rooftop with the intent to kill her before fleeing, police said. The injured girl is undergoing treatment. A case under sections 137(2) (kidnapping), 70(2) (gang rape) and 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant provisions of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, has been registered, said Pathri station house officer Manoj Nautiyal. Meanwhile, the locals gheraoed the local police post on Saturday night, prompting additional deployment of police personnel in the area.
