Chandigarh, Dec. 16 -- UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria on Monday visited the Dadumajra dumping ground to review the status of waste management and assess steps being taken to address environmental and public health concerns. Kataria reviewed the progress of bio-mining and other scientific methods being used to clear legacy waste. Officials informed him that three material recovery facility (MRF) centres are currently operational to segregate and process garbage, and that no new waste heaps are being formed. Efforts are ongoing to remove the existing garbage mound. Officials said that no fresh garbage has been dumped at the site since February, as all waste is now being diverted to MRF centres for processing. However, Kataria expressed concern over the slow pace of clearing old waste, noting that residents in nearby areas continue to face health and environmental problems. He directed that the dumping ground be developed into a green zone through large-scale tree plantation to enhance environmental quality and increase the city's green cover.
