India, Aug. 13 -- F or Kailash Kher, music is not just a form of entertainment but one of the purest art forms to educate and reconnect people with their cultural heritage. The 52-year-old singer, known for hits like Teri Deewani, believes that music carries the stories and history of India, and preserving this legacy is essential for future generations. "What worries me is how music today is largely treated as just a source of entertainment. People are forgetting how deeply it's tied to our identity, our culture, and our history," Kher says. This concern has driven him to pursue a mission beyond his performances: to integrate traditional Indian music education into school curriculums across the country. Through his initiative, KKALA (Kailash Kher Academy for Learning Arts), Kher has already partnered with over 500 schools in Maharashtra, with plans to take this programme nationwide. The goal is simple but profound: to help children rediscover the richness and complexity of Indian music, a heritage that stretches back thousands of years, far beyond the modern soundscape they often encounter. "Many children today believe Indian music is just a recent phenomenon, but in reality, it has existed for millennia," he points out, adding, "They don't know about ragas, the ancient musical modes that form the foundation of our classical traditions, nor do they understand their cultural significance." Kher stresses that teaching music goes far beyond mastering scales or notes. "When I say teaching music, I mean going deeper - explaining how ragas came into being, what emotions they convey, their connections to seasons, times of day, and even ancient stories and philosophies behind them. Only then do children truly grasp what music means." Kher is also actively in discussions with state and central education authorities to formalise music's place in schools, hoping that his vision will inspire policy changes. "Music should not be sidelined or reduced to just entertainment classes. It deserves respect as a critical part of education that shapes minds and hearts."...
