Jubilant cheers, dhol beats fill air as Rohtak rolls out red carpet for Shafali
Rohtak, Nov. 10 -- Cheers, dhol beats filled the air on Sunday as swashbuckling opener Shafali Verma returned to her home town Rohtak to a rousing welcome after the Indian women's team scripted history by lifting its maiden world cup title.
Senior administrative officers, including Rohtak additional deputy commissioner Narendra Kumar, welcomed the Indian opener at Rohad toll plaza and presented her a bouquet. Shafali waived-at the public from the sun-roof of the SUV and expressed gratitude with folded hands. Later Bharatiya Janata party's state vice-president Satish Nandal, Haryana minister Krishan Bedi and ex-minister Manish Grover accompanied the SUV in which Shafali was heading towards her home in the city.
Shafali's father Sanjiv Verma, goldsmith by profession, said it's a matter of pride that Rohtak's daughter played a key role in India's stunning victory in the World Cup final against proteas.
"At the age of 8, Shafali started playing cricket after taking inspiration from iconic Sachin Tendulkar. Her hard work and dedication were the factors behind the success," he added
Addressing media in Rohtak, Shafali said that playing the world cup final is not an easy task and the entire team has one mantra- to show maximum effort in a seven hour game.
"Initially, I was a bit nervous. But my two wickets in the final changed the tempo of the match and thereafter we took a mental victory over the opponent. My 87 run knock in the final is not less than a hundred and winning the world cup is a special moment for all players. Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent two hours with the winning team and we felt proud how he closely watched our matches and appreciated everyone," she said.
She further said that she is excited to meet the chief minister Nayab Singh Saini on October 12....
