Srinagar/Jammu, April 16 -- Stepping up the crackdown against drug traffickers, the Jammu and Kashmir Police on Wednesday attached four residential properties worth Rs.2.25 crore, belonging to alleged peddlers, in Anantnag. This comes a day afterJ&K Police nabbed 18 drug peddlers from across the Union Territory. J&K lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha had, on April 11, launched a 100-day "Drug-Free Jammu Kashmir campaign". A police spokesperson said, "Police in Anantnag have frozen four residential properties under Section 68-F of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The properties are linked to individuals allegedly involved in theillicit narcotics trade in the district." The properties belonged to Rayees Ahmed Dar, Sabzar Ahmad Dar, Mudasir Ahmed Dar and Zahid Ahmad Dar, all residents of Tulkhan, Bijbehara. "Preliminary investigations have revealed that these properties were acquired through proceeds generated from illegal narcotics activities. Acting under the provisions of the NDPS Act, the competent authority has ordered the freezing of these assets. The cumulative market value of the frozen properties is estimated to be approximately Rs.2.25 crore," the spokesman said, adding, further investigation into the matter is underway. Authorities on Wednesday demolished commercial property belonging to an alleged drug peddler in Pulwama. This is the first incident of property demolition carried out by the authorities in J&K after LG launched 'Nasha Mukt Jammu Kashmir Abhiyan'. Intensifying the crusade against drug menace, Jammu and Kashmir lieutenant governor (LG) Manoj Sinha on Wednesday highlighted society's role in fight against drug menace during a 'padyatra' in Ramban, "If the neighbour's house is on fire, yours is not safe. Drugs don't spread like flames but they spread like wind. That's why a 'Whole of Society' response is our only real and potent weapon against the drug menace," the LG said while addressing the public during the drug-Free campaign in Ramban. "Drug abuse isn't just a law and order issue but a social cancer requiring every part of society to fight. I urged for 'whole of government' and 'whole of society' approach. I believe when the government's strength and society's resolve act as one, then even the toughest challenges crumble," LG Sinha said. "We will map every hotspot. And I promise you: we will hit each one like a surgical strike. Not a single smuggler will be spared. The entire network will be dismantled," he said. He blamed Pakistan for orchestrating drug smuggling into J&K to fund terrorism and destroy the young generation.
