Jammu SDM to probe 21-yr-old Gujjar youth's death in police firing
JAMMU, July 26 -- A magisterial probe has been ordered into the death of 21-year-old Gujjar youth in police firing in Phallian Mandal area of Jammu district even as the incident triggered a political storm in the state.
Taking serious note of the incident, the district magistrate on Friday initiated an inquiry to ensure a fair and impartial examination of the facts and circumstances leading to the incident. The inquiry will be conducted by sub-divisional magistrate, Jammu South, and a detailed report will be submitted within two weeks.
Earlier, leaders from across the political spectrum, including chief minister Omar Abdullah and former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti, called for a transparent and time-bound investigation into the matter.
A case was registered following a meeting of the tribal committee with the police here.
The committee members, the administration and the police have announced a compensation of Rs 35 lakh and a job to the next of kin of the deceased.
The deceased, identified as Parvez Ahmad alias Bachu, son of Rehmat Ali and a resident of Javed Nagar in Nikki Tawi, was reportedly killed during a police raid conducted by the special branch in Surre Chak, Phallain Mandal.
According to police, the raid was part of an anti-drug operation, and Parvez was killed in retaliatory fire after officers allegedly came under attack.
"A team of the special branch conducted a raid at a suspected drug den. They were fired upon by some individuals, and during the scuffle, a shot was fired, critically injuring one person who later died," a senior police official said.
However, the police version has been met with skepticism and strong condemnation.
The Gujjar community held protests over the incident. Scores of tribals staged dharna in which senior tribal leaders also participated. They raised slogans seeking justice and claimed that he was innocent and was not involved in drug peddling.
Talking to reporters, Gujjar leader Guftar Choudhary, who was a member of a 10-member committee set up by the community, said that they held talks with top police officers. He said their aim is to ensure that the youth, who was killed in a fake encounter, gets a clean chit and is proven innocent.
"We took to the streets to protest this injustice. We want the case, after the registration of the FIR, to be taken to its logical conclusion," he added.
"The killing of Parvez of Niki Tawi is highly unfortunate and deeply regrettable. Use of force by the police must be calibrated and not indiscriminate. J&K has suffered enough due to such incidents. This must be investigated transparently and swiftly," Omar wrote on X.
Mufti also took to X, questioning the justification of the police action: "Parvez, a tribal youth, was killed by the police. Even if he was suspected of drug dealing, we live in a democracy where justice must be served through the rule of law, not extra-judicial means. I hope the DGP takes note and initiates a fair probe."
BJP's J&K vice president and former minister Choudhary Zulfiqar Ali also demanded a judicial probe....
