Iyer to lead India A squad
LUCKNOW, Sept. 7 -- After missing a berth in the Indian squad for the T20 Asia Cup starting in the UAE on Tuesday, Shreyas Iyer was named skipper of the India A squad that will play two four-day games against Australia A in Lucknow later this month.
With India scheduled to play two Tests against West Indies at the start of October and later against South Africa, both on home turf, the India A experience could help Iyer stage a comeback into the senior squad. The multi-day games also mark a return of Iyer to India's red-ball setup. The four-day games will be played from September 16 and 23 at the Atal Bihari Vajpayee stadium here, the BCCI release said.
A number of other senior India cricketers have also been included in the 15-player squad. Abhimanyu Easwaran, Dhruv Jurel, B Sai Sudharsan, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Prasidh Krishna were all in the Test squad in England.
Uttar Pradesh's Jurel, who skipped Central Zone's first two Duleep Trophy ties due to fever, has been named vice-captain. Batter KL Rahul, who sat out the first South Zone Duleep tie, and star pacer Mohammed Siraj will be added to the squad for the second multi-day match, replacing two players from the squad named.
The red-ball games will be followed by three one-day matches, on September 30, October 3 and October 5, at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur.
Rohit Sharma is expected to feature in the one-day matches as he has reportedly asked BCCI for his inclusion.
A number of players who have impressed in domestic cricket of late are in the India A side - Ayush Badoni, Tanush Kotian, Harsh Dubey, Manav Suthar, N Jagadeesan and Gurnoor Brar.
