Industrialists' body backs unified polls at joint panel meet
Chandigarh, June 18 -- A meeting of the joint committee on the Constitution (One Hundred and Twenty-Ninth Amendment) Bill, 2024, and the Union Territories Law (Amendment) Bill, 2024, was held at New Chandigarh.
The meeting was chaired by Member of Parliament from Lok Sabha and chairperson of the joint committee on One Nation, One Election PP Chaudhary.
Several prominent MP's, including Bansuri Swaraj, Bhartruhari Mahtab, Anil Yeshwant Desai, Shambhavi, Chandan Chauhan, Ghanshyam Tiwari, K Laxman, Yerram Venkata Subba Reddy, ET Mohammed Basheer, andVijay Kumar Hansdak, were present.
A delegation from PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), led by Karan Gilhotra, chair, Punjab State Chapter; Saurabh Munjal, co-chair, Punjab State Chapter; and GS Virk, convener, participated in the discussions.
Welcoming the One Nation, One Election initiative, Karan Gilhotra emphasised its potential to improve governance continuity, reduce frequent election-related expenditures, and enable more effective policy implementation.
He acknowledged that the transition poses challengesbut assured PHDCCI's full cooperation in supportingthe process through stakeholder consultations and dialogue.
The committee also discussed regarding the broader implications of synchronising elections across the country. The consensus amongparticipants highlighted the possibility of greater administrative efficiency, reduced policy interruptions, and amore stable economic environment.
The meeting also saw participation from senior banking officials, including Ashok Chandra, managing director and CEO, Punjab National Bank, and Swarup Kumar Saha, managing director and CEO, Punjab and Sind Bank, along with other leading industry representatives....
