New Delhi, Dec. 12 -- The India-US bilateral trade deal will only be done "when both sides stand to benefit", Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday while confirming "substantive progress" in the India-European Union free trade negotiations as he plans to engage with his EU counterpart on this matter early next month. Addressing a specific question on the timelines of the proposed India-US bilateral trade agreement (BTA) at a press conference in Mumbai, Goyal said: "I can only say that negotiations are progressing well. We've had substantive discussions over several rounds of negotiations in the past, I think five rounds have happened." He was addressing an India-Italy joint press conference with visiting Italian deputy prime minister Antonio Tajaniin in Mumbai. The minister clarified that the current India visit of deputy US Trade Representative (USTR) Rick Switzer is more of a familiarisation visit after the latter assumed office and it is not related to any formal round of the BTA negotiations. "The current visit is not a negotiating round," he said. The current visit of the deputy USTR is his first visit to India as both sides are "getting to know" each other, he added. Switzer joined the office in mid-October and arrived New Delhi on December 9. He held meetings with Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal in the next two days.
