Jammu, May 25 -- Congress leader and leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Saturday described the loss of lives in the recent Pakistan army shelling as a "very big tragedy" and said that he would raise the concerns of the victims of Poonch at the national level. This was the Congress MP's second visit to the region since the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that left 26 tourists dead. Poonch town, located about 20km from the Line of Control, witnessed heightened cross-border artillery and mortar shelling after India carried out precise strikes under Operation Sindoor on nine terror hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on May 7 in response to the Pahalgam massacre. A wave of shelling, missiles and drone strikes by Pakistan killed 28 people, 16 in Poonch district alone, and injured more than 70 between May 7 and 10 across Jammu and Kashmir. Scores fled their homes from areas near the LoC and the border areas to seek refuge in government-run relief camps. Interacting with the media after seeing the destruction in Poonch, he said, "It's a very big tragedy. Several people have died and losses have been suffered. I talked to them (shelling-affected families) and tried to understand their concerns. I shall raise their issues at the national level." Rahul also went to the religious places that were targeted by Pakistani army post Operation Sindoor. At Christ School in Poonch town, he interacted with students and assured them that life would get back to normal. The school lost three students, including twins Ayan and Aruba, 13, children of Rameez Khan. While the siblings were killed in the shelling just outside their house on May 7 morning, 13-year-old Vihaan Bhargav died when a shell hit the car in which he was fleeing Poonch along with his family. "Now you have seen a little bit of danger and a frightening situation, but don't worry, everything will be back to normal. Your way of responding to this problem should be that you study really hard, you play hard and make a lot of friends in school. Will you do that?" he told the schoolchildren. Rahul also expressed regret that the three students of the school had lost their lives in the Pakistani shelling. "You lost your little friends, I am really very sorry for that," he said. Jammu and Kashmir Congress president Tariq Hameed Karra said Rahul visited shell-hit structures, including a gurdwara, a temple, a madrassa and the Christian missionary school. "Rahul Gandhi is the first national leader to reach out to the affected population to express his solidarity and share their pain," he said....
