In court, Luthras reiterate having no link to daily ops of Goa club
PANAJI, Dec. 20 -- Saurabh and Gaurav Luthra, the two main accused in the case of culpable homicide and dangerous acts leading to a fire at their nightclub in Goa's Arpora, have denied any direct role in running the day to day operations of the club and have sought to emphasis that they only have limited culpability for the fire, police officers familiar with the ongoing investigation told HT on Friday.
The fire incident at Goa's Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub claimed at least 25 lives.
The two brothers, who were deported from Thailand and arrested by the Goa Police after being brought back to India, were remanded to five days police custody on December 17, by a local court.
"As accused, they are seeking to shirk responsibility for the events that led to the fire.In fact, on cross questioning of the accused, each has triedto claim as little liability as possible saying that the others were responsible," the official, who asked not to be quoted, said.
Appearing before the sessions judge in Delhi, the Luthras claimed that they operate from Delhi and "do not run the day to day operations" which is instead taken care of by on ground/restaurant managers.
They also claimed that they had "no personal information about the fire" and that they "subsequently learnt that an external third-party performer was allegedly performing at the restaurant... who brought her own equipment, staff and did not use any flammable material."
"We will be establishing their culpability via documentary evidence in the form of ownership agreements, running the club without licences, repeated and deliberate violations of the terms of the licences in cases where they have been granted licences and financial wrongdoing," the official said....
