Sangrur, Nov. 4 -- Around a week after the family of a retired CBI DSP (Ranbir Singh Sidhu) had to place wooden planks across a sewage-filled street in Ramnagar Basti of Sangrur district to carry his body to the cremation ground, the Punjab State & Chandigarh Human Rights Commission on Monday sought a report from the municipal council's executive officer. The issue was highlighted through media. The commission, comprising chairperson justice Sant Parkash and member justice Gurbir Singh, directed the executive officer to ensure that the report is submitted one week before the next hearing (December 9). Meanwhile, eight councillors who have already resigned from the ruling party locked the main door of the Sangrur municipal office for about an hour to lodge their protest over accumulation of dirty water in streets. Vinaypal, husband of a councillor, said the action was aimed at highlighting the negligence of the administration. Residents say the accumulation of sewage in streets of the area has been troubling them for months, triggering illness and claiming lives. A local resident said the unhygienic conditions have led to six deaths in the area due to water-borne diseases. When contacted, senior medical officer Karamjit Singh said there were two dengue-related deaths in the area. "Both victims were admitted to private hospitals," he said....
