Sultanpur Lodhi, Aug. 28 -- With over 35,000 acres of agricultural land submerged amid the grim flood situation, farmers in Kapurthala's Sultanpur Lodhi have said that their last hope has been dashed after the major breach in the advance bundh in Aahli Kalan village. Videos of farmers cursing the their fate fter the breach went viral on social media. "Expecting no improvement in the coming days, we have entrusted everything to the grace of the Almighty," farmers said. Nearly 8,000 people of 14 worst-affected villages have already been evacuated to safer places due to the sudden increase in the water level in the Beas river. Though most of the affected people have shifted to safer locations with their livestocks and valuables, those who don't have resources to keep their livestocks are left with no option than to stay back in their houses, surrounded by 15-16 feet deep water. Pargat Singh (35) of Sangra village said he and his family come to dhussi bundh every morning through boats after milking their buffaloes and go back in the evening again for the same and then stay back. "We have already lost paddy sown on five acres as it has been submerged for the past 15 days," Singh said. Shinder Singh (44) of Baupur village who lost his paddy crop on 10 acres, said, "No one understands the pain of losing everything in front of our eyes. The floods dent the farmers not only financially but also emotionally." The mand area, located between the Beas and dhussi bundh (main embankment managed by the state government), remains disconnected from the mainland. Roohar Singh, 55, was sitting at dhussi bundh, seeing his standing paddy crop gradually submerging in the gushing water of Beas following a breach in advance embankment on Tuesday. "There is no hope left after the breach. Even there is no hope of compensation from the state government as we know that we will be offered peanuts after special girdawari," he said....
