Holi Done Right: Care Tips for Skin and Hair
India, Feb. 28 -- Holi brings colourful celebrations; but without the right care, it can also leave behind irritated skin, dry hair and stubborn stains. With a little preparation beforehand and restorative care afterwards, you can enjoy the festival without letting it take a toll.
"Apply a thick moisturiser or coconut oil to your skin at least 20-30 minutes before stepping out. This prevents colours from settling deep into the pores," says dermatologist Dr Akriti Gupta. She also recommends applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen. "Pay attention to sensitive areas such as the lips, eyelids, ears and around the nails. A thick lip balm and a little petroleum jelly around the nostrils and cuticles can help prevent staining and irritation," she adds.
Aesthetic physician Dr Karuna Malhotra suggests a post-playing skincare routine: "If the skin burns or itches, avoid scrubbing. Rinse with plain water first, then use a mild cleanser. Use lukewarm or cool water instead of hot water. After bathing, apply a soothing moisturiser with ingredients such as aloe vera or glycerin to restore hydration."
Dr Karuna says, "Oiling the scalp and hair length forms a coating that prevents chemical pigments from adhering strongly to the hair shaft. Tie your hair in a braid or bun instead of leaving it open to reduce tangling and colour build-up.
After playing, she recommends using a mild shampoo. "If some colour remains, don't panic, it will fade gradually. Follow with conditioner, and consider a light oil massage the next day to replenish moisture," she says....
