Rudrapur, May 2 -- The headmaster of a government primary school in Jaspur, Udham Singh Nagar district, has been suspended after an inspection revealed irregularities in the Mid-Day Meal (MDM) scheme, officials said on Thursday. "The Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Jaspur conducted an inspection and found discrepancies in the implementation of the Mid-Day Meal scheme. Based on the SDM's report, we have suspended the headmaster of the school," said Harendra Mishra, District Education Officer (Basic), US Nagar. The inspection was prompted by a complaint from Manoj Kumar, a social activist from Kasampur village in Jaspur. He alleged irregularities in both student attendance and the serving of mid-day meals. Acting on the complaint, the SDM conducted a surprise inspection on April 15. According to the SDM's findings, while the school's attendance register listed 31 students present out of 37 enrolled, only 12 students were actually found present at the time of inspection. The sub-divisional magistrate subsequently sent a letter to the education department recommending departmental action against the headmaster, Mahendra Singh.
