HC notice to UT, Punjab on plea from key witness demanding security cover
Chandigarh, Nov. 15 -- The Punjab and Haryana high court has sought responses from Chandigarh administration and the Punjab government on a petition filed by Balwinder Singh, a key witness in the 1995 assassination of former chief minister Beant Singh, who is seeking Chandigarh police security cover and claiming threats from Khalistani terrorists.
The bench of justice Vinod S Bhardwaj has asked the respondents to file their replies by December 11.
Balwinder, who resides in Nayagaon, has alleged that the security personnel currently deputed by Punjab are "unprofessional". He is now seeking a time-bound threat assessment and transfer of his security to Chandigarh police since he is now planning to shift to Chandigarh.
The former CM was killed in a suicide bombing at the secretariat complex in Chandigarh on August 31, 1995, during the peak of militancy. Singh's testimony had helped in the arrest of key accused in the assassination case....
