HC judge raises alarm on rising drug abuse
Shimla, Nov. 30 -- Justice Vivek Singh Thakur of the Himachal Pradesh high court warned that unchecked drug abuse could one day "collapse" the foundations of families, society and the nation. He was addressing a legal literacy camp organised by NALSA and the Himachal Pradesh State Legal Services Authority at Baru, Hamirpur. "The time has come for introspection," he said. "Even if our families are safe today, our children may fall prey in the future. We must begin to change within ourselves and our families." Justice Virender Singh said, "Drug addiction is not just a crime; it also gives rise to many other crimes. Even Devbhoomi has been severely affected." Justice Jiya Lal Bhardwaj added, "If we interfere too much with nature, it reminds us of its power. Environmental protection must go hand in hand with development."
To fight the problem of drugs, director general of police Ashok Tewari called for "strong collaboration" between the police and the medical fraternity.
He was interacting with the students of Dr Rajendra Prasad Government Medical College, Tanda, on Saturday as part of the ongoing state-wide outreach under anti-chitta campaign.
Addressing the students, Tewari highlighted that defeating Chitta requires strong collaboration between the police and the medical fraternity.He emphasised that drug abuse is both a law-enforcement and a public-health challenge, where doctors play an indispensable role in early detection, counselling and rehabilitation....
