HC expansion plan: a work in progress
India, Dec. 30 -- Amid a severe space crunch at thePunjab and Haryana high court, and most stakeholders opposed to shifting the court out of Chandigarh, a panel looking into the HC's holistic development plan has recommended setting up a new complex behind the heritage HC building. If approved, the HC may have 30-35 more courtrooms, on a 11.42 lakh sq ft area, along with 11.17 lakh sq ft of additional parking space. As thesanctioned strength of judges increased from 40 in 1993 to 85 in 2014, the need for aredevelopment plan was felt and initiated in 2014. But after the Capitol Complex, including the Le Corbusier-designed HC building, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016, the plan was shelved.
What it means: With just 69 courtrooms at present, the HC is unable to accommodate even those appointed against the sanctioned strength. If the plan gets a greenlight, the space issue may not crop up for the nextcouple of decades.
What next: The HC and UT are in process of finalising the design of the Rs.1,300 crore new complex to submit before the UNESCO panel, whose nod is mandatory....
