HC directs govt to lock union rooms in colleges
Kolkata, July 4 -- The Calcutta high court on Thursday ordered that students' union rooms in colleges and universities across West Bengal should remain closed, with the directive coming amid widespread outrage over alleged gang rape of a first-year student inside the premises of South Calcutta Law College on June 25.
A division bench comprising justices Soumen Sen and Smita Das De passed the order while hearing a set PILs on the alleged gang rape. The court also directed the state government to file an affidavit detailing the progress of the investigation into the gang rape case.
"The division bench of Justice Soumen Sen and Justice Smita Das De has directed the state education department to shut down union rooms in all colleges and universities across the state," Sayan Banerjee, advocate and one of the petitioners, said.
The court, however, directed that these rooms can be used for official purposes, if absolutely required, only after written permission from the registrar of the university or the principal of the institution concerned.
In the gang rape case, though the alleged incident took place inside the security guard's room on June 25 evening, the 24-year-old survivor in her complaint has alleged that the accused - Monojit Mishra, a former student at the state-run law college, Zaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee, both current students - had started sexually harassing her in the students' union room of the institution.
All three, as well as a security guard, Pinaki Banerjee, were arrested and sent to the police custody in connection with the case. To be sure, students' body elections across educational institutions in the eastern state were last held in 2013.
The division bench on Thursday directed the state government to file an affidavit on its plans to hold the pending elections, while posting the matter for further hearing on July 17....
