HC allows convicted former DSP to travel abroad
Chandigarh, April 4 -- The Punjab and Haryana high court has allowed retired Punjab deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Raka Ghirra, convicted in a 2011 corruption case, to travel abroad for a month.
The bench of justice Aman Chaudhary passed the order on a plea from Ghirra, in which she had pleaded that she be allowed to visit Spain, Switzerland and Czechia for a period of one month from April 10, her lawyer Nikhil Ghai said.
She was convicted by a CBI special court in February 2024 and found guilty under Sections 7, 13 (1) (d) and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act. She was awarded six-year jail. Subsequently, the sentence was suspended by the high court in July 2024.
In 2011, Ghirra, 61, was arrested by the CBI from her residence at Sector 15, Chandigarh, for accepting a bribe of Rs.1 lakh from a realtor to settle his case. The court has imposed strict conditions regarding her visit. She has been ordered to furnish property documents as part of the bail bonds, along with one surety from a family member of Rs.30 lakh and a bank guarantee of Rs.10 lakh as security, with the condition that if she fails to return on expiry of the stipulated period, the amount shall be forfeited to the state....
