Gouri speaks out after body-shaming video goes viral
India, Nov. 9 -- After a video from a press meet at Chennai on Thursday, went viral, actor Gouri G Kishan found herself at the centre of discussion. During the meet for her Tamil film Others, YouTuber-turned-journalist RS Karthik asked her co-star about her weight, a question she immediately called out as "irrelevant" and "a disgrace to the profession". The incident dominated news feeds.
Reacting to the controversy, Gouri posted a detailed statement on Instagram on Saturday, a part of which reads: "Comments or questions that target a person's body are inappropriate in any context. I wish I had been asked questions about the film - the work I was there for. I am grateful for being able to stand my ground in a difficult situation."
Speaking about the incident, she told India Today that the room was filled with men, from crew to journalists: "That was harassment and bullying. The silence in the hall was appalling. He didn't ask a single question about my character or my role... I could have spoken a lot more but went into survival mode. This incident affected my mental health. I was almost crying."
She added that nobody from the team spoke out either: "My director could have shut it down in one line. That's okay. My crew's lack of response wasn't ill-intentioned. We froze."
On Friday, Karthik posted an apology on YouTube, saying in Tamil: "I did not ask the question with the intention of offending actress Gouri Kishan. My question was misunderstood. I apologise if she was offended."
