Goa fire: Court grants bail to two, denies GM plea
PANAJI, Dec. 24 -- A local court in Goa on Tuesday denied bail to Vivek Singh, general manager of Birch by Romeo Lane, where a fire killed 25 people earlier this month, while granting bail to two others - bar manager Rajveer Singhania and gate manager Priyanshu Thakur.
The three were among four managers arrested by the police on December 7, the day of the fire, and have remained in custody since. The fourth, chief general manager Rajiv Modak, is yet to apply for bail. Meanwhile, the district court has reserved its verdict on the anticipatory bail pleas filed by sarpanch Roshan Redkar and panchayat secretary Raghuvir Bagkar. "The court has heard final arguments and has reserved the matter for order on December 30," said advocate Nitin Sardesai, who represented Redkar.
Redkar and Bagkar, named accused for failing to act against the allegedly illegal nightclub, argued that they cannot be held personally liable as the trade licence decision was taken collectively by the panchayat body. The court will pronounce its verdict on December 30.
In a separate development, the sessions court has reserved its order on the bail plea of Bharat Singh Kohli, who managed the restaurants on behalf of the Luthras until December 26. Kohli, arrested from Delhi, is the fifth accused in the case. The Goa Police have also 'rearrested' Ajay Gupta, described as a 'sleeping' business partner of the Luthras, on charges of cheating and forgery. Investigators allege that the company used a forged health NOC to secure multiple licences to operate the premises. Including the Luthras, six people have been arrested so far. htc...
