GMADA, MC raze illegal structures in Phase 11
Mohali, Dec. 6 -- The Mohali municipal corporation (MC) and the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority (GMADA) on Friday conducted a joint demolition drive in Phase 11, targeting illegal constructions outside residences and behind the market area.
Several unauthorised structures, including sheds and extended portions, were pulled down as part of the ongoing anti-encroachment campaign.
The drive commenced with strong opposition from the residents, but after around one hour of chaos, the authorities went ahead with the action.
Earlier, MC and GMADA had initiated the campaign from Phase 4, but after allegations of selective action, the drive has now been restarted systematically from Phase 11.
Officials said that fruit vendors encroaching on the main road were removed, and an illegal setup run by a dhaba operator near the Phase 11 Community Centre wall was also cleared. Unauthorised extensions built in front of houses along the Phase 11 B-Road were similarlydismantled.
A large police force was deployed to ensure smooth execution of the action, with deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Harsimran Singh Bal overseeing security arrangements at the spot.
MC superintendent Mandeep Singh, who headed the operation, said the drive was carried out in compliance with directions issued in an ongoing contempt case before the Punjab and Haryana high court. Two excavators were used for the task, he added.
With heavy police presence, the demolition took place without any resistance. Officials said similar enforcement drives will continue in other areas as part of the encroachment removal effort....
