AMRITSAR, Dec. 9 -- Chief minister Rekha Gupta, along with her cabinet ministers, visited the holy city on Monday and paid obeisance at the Golden Temple to seek Guru's blessings after the Delhi government successfully organised the three-day 'Gurmat Samagam' (religious congregation) last month at the historic Red Fort lawns, commemorating the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. Akal Takht jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj raised the issue of releasing Devinderpal Singh Bhullar, a 1993 Delhi bomb blast convict, with the Delhi CM. During the visit, the Delhi CM met Gargaj at the secretariat of the Akal Takht. Gargaj told Gupta that the case of 'Sikh prisoner' Bhullar has been pending with her government and that his release could be ensured with just one signature of hers. Gargaj said that former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal kept Bhullar's case pending, and the present BJP government has a good opportunity to release him from prison. Whenever the nation's security is at stake, it is the youth of Punjab who stand at the forefront and make the greatest sacrifices, he claimed. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has been seeking the release of several 'Sikh prisoners', including Bhullar, who was convicted for the bomb blast in Delhi in September 1993 that claimed nine lives and injured 31 others. Bhullar was awarded the death penalty by a TADA court in August 2001, but his capital punishment was commuted to a life sentence by the Supreme Court in 2014. He was shifted to the Amritsar Central Jail from Delhi's Tihar Jail on health grounds in June 2015. Gupta also shared that the Delhi government will organise various programmes throughout the coming year to mark the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur. "Arrangements are also being made for the publication of special books to convey Guru Sahib's teachings and the story of his sacrifice to schoolchildren," Gupta said. She added that governments and institutions across the country are commemorating Guru Sahib's birth and martyrdom anniversaries with deep devotion....
