Gauri Sawant slams Transgender Amendment Bill
India, March 27 -- Transgender rights activist Gauri Sawant has strongly criticised the Rajya Sabha passing the Transgender Amendment Bill, calling it a "violation of human rights."
"Itna zaroori kyun tha yeh karna? Put yourself in my place and think about how wrong this is, that one needs to prove, with proof, they are transgender," says Gandhi who is transgender herself.
The response came after the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Bill, 2026, which imposes stricter identification requirement of the community via a medical board, has sparked massive outrage.
Further emphasising this point, Gauri continues, "To those who are saying one needs to get themselves tested for proof, we should in turn ask them weird questions like 'aapko kaunsi sabzi pasand hai, pehle apna narcotics test karwake dikhao aur phir hi voh sabzi milegi. What is this? It's wrong." Some might be of the opinion that this Amendment could actually benefit the genuine members of the community. But Gauri argues, "Har samaaj mein sahi aur galat log hote hain. To punish those 99 wrong people out of 100, you are also punishing the remaining one who is honest. It's the court which will decide who is wrong."...
