Mumbai, Dec. 30 -- Four people were killed and nine others injured on Monday when a reversing bus of Mumbai's civic-run transport undertaking BEST mowed down people near a bus stop outside Bhandup (W) railway station, police said. According to preliminary reports, the driver whose identity has not been made public, was trying to take a U-turn to go into the adjacent bus depot when he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brakes, and rammed into the queue of commuters. "I heard the sound of a huge crash and ran out of my shop to see some people lying injured on the road; the bus too had been damaged," said Bholanath Gupta, who runs a shop next to the bus depot. Balasaheb Pawar, senior police inspector of Bhandup police station, said that the police team is at the spot and are rushing the injured to the hospital. "At least four people have been crushed under the bus," said Pawar. Police said the incident took place at around 10pm, when the reversing bus ploughed into the group of people near the bus stop. Deputy commissioner of police zone 7, Hemraj Rajput, said the driver has been taken into custody and added that five of those seriously injured have been taken to Fortis Hospital.
