five people die in rain-related cases in k'taka, maha; toll rises to 11: officials
Bengaluru/Mumbai/Kochi, May 28 -- At least five more deaths in rain-related incidents in Maharashtra and Karnataka were reported on Tuesday as the early monsoon onset continued to pound the western coastal states for the third day in a row. With this, the toll has risen to 11 with six deaths reported on Monday.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to extreme rainfall in the region till Saturday. The weather department issued a red alert for two districts in Kerala and three in Karnataka for Wednesday.
Three more deaths were reported in Maharashtra, taking the total number of rain-related deaths in the state to eight. The deceased lost their lives due to lightning, wall collapses, falling trees, and drowning, officials said, adding that two people have been injured and are being treated at a government hospital.
P Vishnu Belliappa (65) of Banangala village in Kodagu district sustained severe injuries when a tree fell on him. He died on his way to the hospital. In the other incident, 55-year-old Shantavva Talawar lost her life after the wall and roof of her house collapsed in the early hours of Tuesday in Haveri district....
