India, April 19 -- Zulfiqar Khan, a child rights activist and theatre personality based in Chandigarh, was arrested in July 2015 for sexually abusing minors associated with his NGO, Theatre Age. The NGO was focused on training underprivileged children in fine arts and theatre. Allegations surfaced when victims, including minors, reported that Khan had been engaging in unnatural sex with them for six to seven years. Khan was arrested and charged under Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act. The legal proceedings faced challenges, particularly when the sole minor witness turned hostile during the trial. Despite the setback, the main complainant maintained his stand, saying he had witnessed Khan sexually abusing children during extra classes at his house. In January 2017, a local court convicted Khan in three cases of sodomy, sentencing him to a total of 21 years in prison - seven years for each case. He also received one-year rigorous imprisonment for distributing obscene objects to young persons, along with a fine of Rs.31,000. Khan appealed against his conviction, and in March 2017, the Punjab and Haryana high court admitted his appeal in one of the three cases.
