Ex-wrestler arrested after eight-year chase
New Delhi, June 1 -- The crime branch of Delhi Police on Saturday arrested a 32-year-old former national-level wrestler-turned-gunrunner, who had been evading arrest in an illegal firearms trafficking case for the past eight years, police said.
He was declared a proclaimed offender (PO) by a Delhi court.
Sonu alias Pahalwan, a resident of Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh supplied arms and ammunition to two men involved in a murder case in 2016, said officials familiar with the case.
"Sonu disclosed that he was once a national-level wrestler. His athletic career was cut short in 2013 following a road accident that resulted in the amputation of his right leg. Faced with financial hardship, he admitted to aligning himself with criminal elements to support his family. He, along with a group of accomplices, has since been implicated in multiple heinous crimes, including dacoity and murder," said deputy commissioner of police (crime) Apoorva Gupta.
"He was actively involved in the illicit arms trade, supplying firearms and supplying liquor to various criminal networks," Apoorva Gupta added....
