Everyone's on pointe: Why ballet's taking over fitness studios

riginally the domain of tutus and pointe shoes, ballet is now pirouetting its way into fitness studios and wellness routines everywhere. What was once a niche pursuit for the devoted few has become the latest lifestyle obsession, blending fitness, mindfulness, and artistry into one graceful package.
"Over the years, I've definitely seen a steady rise in the number of children enrolling in ballet. There is a growing awareness and appreciation for this art form in India today," says Khushcheher Dallas, director of The School of Classical Ballet and Western Dance. Khushcheher credits this growth to several factors, including increased access to quality training, as well as social media and films: "The availability of more qualified ballet teachers across the country has provided greater access to quality training. Social media has also played a huge role in showcasing ballet's beauty and discipline, inspiring many young dancers. And of course, films like Yeh Ballet have brought the art form into the mainstream, sparking curiosity and admiration among parents and children alike."
Khushcheher explains that children usually begin their ballet training around the age of four and a half, and emphasises that, like any form of classical training, ballet requires consistency and patience. "Parents need to understand that progress in ballet doesn't happen overnight; it's a gradual process of building strength, discipline, and artistry over time. Ballet needs to be nurtured step by step, with commitment, time, and a genuine love for learning," she adds.
Pia Sutaria, founder of the Institute of Classical and Modern Dance India, says ballet education today is about much more than just dance skills. "There's a deeper understanding now that ballet education nurtures not just dancers, but confident, disciplined, and creative individuals. It's been very encouraging to witness that shift. The essentials are a good teacher, correct foundational training, and the right environment," she says....
