Chandigarh, May 28 -- The administration on Tuesday demolished structures encroaching the land alongside the National Highway 5 from Hallomajra traffic lights till the Union Territory's boundary towards Zirakpur side. The reclaimed land will now be developed as per the approved infrastructure plan, which includes road widening, construction of service lanes, pedestrian walkways and beautification of the corridor, the administration stated. The encroachments had not only hindered developmental activities but also posed serious traffic and safety concerns, officials said. The operation, which covered approximately 2.5 km, was executed in coordination with officials of the engineering department, police and others.
