Ahmedabad, June 21 -- A total of 231 victims of the Air India plane crash have been identified through DNA tests, and the mortal remains of 210 of them were handed over to their families, a health official said on Friday. According to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital superintendent Dr Rakesh Joshi, 10 families are expected to collect the remains of their loved ones in the coming days, while three bodies are awaiting air clearance and will be handed over to the families shortly. Eight families are still awaiting confirmation of DNA matches with other relatives. "Of the 210 bodies handed over so far, 155 were of Indian nationals, seven were from Portugal, 36 from the United Kingdom, one from Canada, and 11 were among those who died on the ground due to the impact of the crash. Eight such bodies, which could be visually identified, were released without the need for DNA matching," Joshi said. "The Indian nationals who were identified so far belonged to various parts of the country, including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Diu and Nagaland," he added. Among the victims who were identified through DNA sampling were Sarlaben Thakur, a 52-year-old cook at the BJ Medical College hostel, and her two-year-old granddaughter, Aadhya Thakur, who were in the hostel when the plane crashed. Their remains were identified through DNA matching and handed over to their family on Thursday. Sarlaben and Aadhya were cremated on Friday in Ahmedabad, as the family mourned their loss. Meanwhile, the last rites of Lamnunthem Singson, the Kuki air hostess who died in the crash, was held in Kangpokpi district of Manipur. "The mortal remains of Lamnunthem Singson, one of the crew members from Manipur who died in the unfortunate Air India Flight 171 crash in Ahmedabad on 12th June, 2025 was laid to rest today at Kangpokpi cemetery, Mission Road. There was a large gathering of people who had come to pay homage. The last rites of the deceased passed off peacefully. Security arrangements were in place during the event," Manipur Police said in a statement. The final rites of Maheshbhai Kalavadia (Jirawala), a Gujarati filmmaker, who was also among those who died on ground due to plane crash, was also held on Friday. A resident of Murlidhar Heights in Naroda, he was known for music videos. He was the CEO of Mahesh Jirawala Productions and had directed a Gujarati film in 2019. According to police, a missing complaint was filed by his wife at Meghaninagar Police Station few days after the crash and according to an official, his last known location was traced to within 700 metres of the crash site. He had been to a meeting at Law Garden area, which is about 5-6km away from the crash site, and had called his wife around 1.15 pm to tell her that he was on his way home, the official added.
