New Delhi, July 29 -- The Centre on Monday said it has not undertaken any formal assessment of the economic impact of the Pahalgam terrorist attack on stakeholders in the tourism industry in Jammu & Kashmir, despite concerns over a possible dip in tourist footfall during the peak season.
In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha, Union tourism minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat said that while data on domestic and foreign tourist visits is received from the J&K Tourism Department, no evaluation has been carried out by the ministry. As per data shared by ministry, tourist arrivals in the Union Territory have consistently risen over the past five years. In 2020, 2.519 million domestic and 5,317 foreign tourists visited J&K. By 2023, the figures rose to 20.6 million domestic and 55,337 foreign tourists. The upward trend continued in 2024, with 23.5 million domestic and 65,452 foreign tourists. For the first six months of 2025, 9.5 million domestic and 19,570 foreign tourists were recorded.
While the figures suggest a steady increase in tourist footfall, there is no data available yet to determine the short-term impact of the Pahalgam incident.
