Duped by agents,3 Punjab youths return from Russia
Jalandhar, April 13 -- Three Punjab youths stranded in Russia after alleged exploitation by travel agents have returned to India.
The returnees, along with their kin, met Rajya Sabha member Balbir Singh Seechewal, who took up the matter with the ministry of external affairs.
The returnees are Ashok Kumar from Nakodar, Karampal Singh of Goindwal Sahib in Tarn Taran district and Harjinder Singh of Kharar in Mohali district.
Ashok said that he had travelled to Moscow on January 19 after paying approximately Rs.3 lakh to a travel agent, who had promised a monthly salary of Rs.90,000-Rs.1 lakh, along with accommodation, meals, and a one-year job guarantee.
"After working for nearly two months, when salary payment was due on March 20, the company owner reportedly handed him and his colleagues over to the police on the night of March 13," he said. He added that during detention, he survived for seven days solely on water.
"The prisoners were provided minimal food, just enough to survive, and were allegedly subjected to harsh treatment, including electric shocks," he said. Ashok's family had approached Seechewal on March 29....
