Ferozepur, Nov. 11 -- An assistant sub-inspector (ASI), Balwant Singh of Ferozepur police, had a narrow escape on Monday after a drug-accused opened fire at the police team during checking. The ASI suffered a gunshot wound to his jaw. According to reports, ASI Balwant Singh and his team were conducting a routine patrol and checking, during which, a man identified as Pavitar Singh alias Gurdit Singh, a resident of village Naju Shah Mishriwala was stopped. "During questioning, the accused got into a heated argument with the police team and suddenly snatched the ASI's weapon and opened fire. The bullet hit ASI's jaw. The officer was rushed to a private hospital. His condition is stated to be stable," said Karan Sharma, DSP (rural), Ferozepur. The DSP added that the accused, who is currently out on bail, has a long criminal record with 10 registered cases, including seven under the NDPS Act and one under the Arms Act.
