DIG Bhullar suspended,booked under Excise Act
Chandigarh/Ludhiana, Oct. 19 -- Following his arrest in a high-profile corruption case, the Punjab government has suspended deputy inspector general (DIG) of police, Ropar range, Harcharan Singh Bhullar, and he now faces fresh legal trouble after being booked under the Excise Act in connection with a large seizure of liquor from his farmhouse in Samrala.
Bhullar, a 2007-batch IPS officer, was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on October 16 for allegedly demanding an Rs.8 lakh bribe from a scrap dealer. On Saturday, the state home department issued formal suspension orders, invoking Rule 3(2) of the All India Services (Discipline & Appeal) Rules.
During searches at his residence, the CBI seized Rs.7.5 crore in cash and 2.5kg of gold jewellery, luxury watches and documents pertaining to more than 50 immovable properties.
Adding to his legal woes, Bhullar was booked under the Punjab Excise Act after the CBI seized 108 bottles of liquor during a raid at his farmhouse near Bondli village in Samrala. The raid was part of the broader corruption probe.
A new FIR has been registered at Samrala police station under Sections 61, 1, and 14 of the Excise Act.
