Delhi: 4 effluent treatment plants failed norms in Feb
New Delhi, March 23 -- The Delhi Pollution Control Committee's (DPCC) monthly assessment of Common Effluent Treatment Plants (CETPs) in Delhi's industrial areas has found that four of the 13 plants failed to meet prescribed water treatment standards in February, while reports for two others were unavailable. The findings come amid the Delhi government's move to take over operations of the Okhla CETP following an inspection that flagged several deficiencies.
The issue has also gained attention after pink froth was seen over the Okhla barrage of the Yamuna, raising concerns over untreated industrial effluents entering the river.
According to DPCC's February report, CETPs in Naraina, Badli, GTK and Lawrence Road industrial areas failed to meet treatment norms. Data for the Narela and Bawana CETPs was not available, with no explanation.
The GTK CETP recorded the most significant violations, with outlet water failing on multiple parameters, including sulphides, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and total suspended solids (TSS). Against the permissible BOD level of 30 mg/L, GTK logged 40 mg/L. TSS stood at 120 mg/L against the limit of 100 mg/L, and sulphide levels were 3.6 mg/L against the limit of less than 2 mg/L. The Lawrence Road CETP recorded sulphide levels of 2.2 mg/L, while the Badli CETP recorded BOD levels of 37 mg/L. The Naraina and Lawrence Road facilities also failed on sulphide treatment.
Other CETPs were found compliant, the report noted.
While the report dated March 6 stated that the Okhla CETP met treatment norms, authorities ordered resampling after a video circulated online purportedly showed dark, untreated discharge into a nearby drain. Subsequently, on March 20, DPCC directed the industries department "to take over operation and maintenance of Okhla CETP within 30 days", citing operational deficiencies. DPCC did not respond to requests for comment. Delhi has 28 approved industrial areas, but only 17 are connected to the 13 CETPs designed to treat industrial wastewater. The remaining 11 approved areas, along with 26 unplanned industrial clusters, discharge waste into stormwater drains ultimately flowing into Yamuna. A Delhi government report submitted to the Union water ministry last year stated that the 28 industrial areas house 29,823 units. Of these, 3,419 units in 11 areas lack CETP connectivity. The combined capacity of the 13 CETPs is 212.3 million litres per day (MLD)....
