Mohali, June 27 -- A Mohali court on Thursday sent senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia, who was arrested by the vigilance bureau from his residence in Amritsar on Wednesday under the under the Prevention of Corruption Act for allegedly laundering more than Rs.540 crore of "drug money", to a seven-day vigilance remand. Majithia was presented before the court of judicial magistrate first class Kirandeep Singh, where the vigilance bureau sought a 15-day remand, but the court granted seven days custody after hearing arguments from both sides. The court order came nearly three hours after Majithia was brought to the court complex under tight security. Police from three districts were deployed, and the area around the district courts was cordoned off, creating a curfew-like situation. Even court employees faced difficulty entering the premises, and public access was severely restricted. Special public prosecutors Ferry Sofat and Preet Inder Pal Singh, along with the public prosecutor, argued that 15 days' remand was necessary to verify financial records and transactions mentioned in the FIR. They cited large unexplained financial flows involving Majithia and his associates. Briefing the media outside the court, Sofat stated that Majithia's income of over Rs.540 crore remains unaccounted for. His company, Saraya, allegedly received Rs.161 crore in cash deposits and Rs.141 crore from foreign entities, for which no legitimate source has been provided. Additionally, Rs.236 crore was credited to Saraya's accounts without explanation in the financial statements, he said. Sofat claimed that Majithia's wife, MLA Ganieve Kaur, had incorporated a firm with a seed capital of Rs.1 crore, which reported a profit of Rs.56 lakh in its first year. However, no further operational details of the firm are available. The prosecution highlighted suspicious financial dealings of Majithia's firms with entities based in Cyprus and Singapore, known tax havens. His counsel, however, strongly opposed the remand plea. Officials said that Majithia is accused of amassing properties and assets worth Rs.540 crore, disproportionate to his known sources of income during the period between 2007 and 2012. Police from three districts - Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib and Ropar - were deployed outside the court complex. DIG, Ropar range, HS Bhullar was supervising the deployment. Apart from this, four SPs, six DSP, all the SHO's and other police staff were present. Several SAD supporters who had gathered outside the court complex were taken into preventive custody. SAD leaders were raising slogans against Bhagwant Mann and the AAP government....
