Pune, June 1 -- A special MP/MLA court in Pune on Saturday rejected Congress MP Rahul Gandhi's application seeking details of the maternal lineage of Satyaki Savarkar, the grand-nephew of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, over his defamation complaint against the Leader of Opposition's 2023 remarks about the Hindutva ideologue.
Satyaki Savarkar had filed a defamation complaint against Gandhi over his speech in London in March 2023, wherein the Congress leader allegedly claimed that VD Savarkar written in a book that he and his friends once beat up a Muslim man, and felt happy about it. Satyaki contended that Savarkar never made such claims and called Gandhi's remarks "fictitious, false, and malicious".
In an application filed on May 28, Gandhi alleged that the complainant in the defamation case, Satyaki Savarkar, has concealed material facts regarding his maternal lineage - specifically, that he is the grandson of Gopal Vinayak Godse, the brother of Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse.
Rahul Gandhi, through his advocate Milind Pawar, contended that this omission was significant in the ongoing criminal defamation case filed by Satyaki against Gandhi....
