Councillor's kin, employed as MC driver, dismissed for graft
Chandigarh, Oct. 17 -- The Chandigarh municipal corporation (MC) on Thursday dismissed a contractual employee, who is a relative of an Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) councillor in the city, on charges of corruption.
The dismissed employee, Manpreet Singh, worked as a driver with the medical officer health (MOH) wing of the MC.
The action came after Gurpreet Singh Jangu, a Kharar resident, alleged that the accused had taken Rs.3 lakh bribe from him on the pretext of getting him a job with the MC. The deal was settled for Rs.2.5 lakh and in October 2022, the complainant gave Rs.50,000 cash to Manpreet as bribe. He also handed over the documents related to his educational qualifications.
Later, the accused told him that Rs.2 lakh had been transferred to another person's account. The complainant further said that it's been three years and he is still without a job. He tried contacting the driver again but got no response.
The complaint was filed with MC officials and Chandigarh senior superintendent of police (SSP) six days ago. The dismissal order was issued on Thursday.
Mayor Harpreet Kaur Babla confirmed the dismissal of the employee and said an investigation is underway....
