COPD Awareness Month: Understanding a silent threat in India
	
		
				India, Nov. 1 -- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, or COPD, is one of the most common yet often overlooked health problems in India. It refers to a group of lung conditions, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema, that cause breathing difficulties.
People with COPD experience persistent cough, mucus production, shortness of breath, and frequent chest infections. Unfortunately, many dismiss these symptoms as signs of aging or seasonal allergies and delay seeking medical help.
In India, one of the main reasons is exposure to air pollution, both outdoors and indoors. Household smoke from cooking with firewood or coal, tobacco smoking, significantly increases the risk.
Early diagnosis through lung function tests can make a major difference, but awareness remains low.
Every November, COPD Awareness Month serves as an important reminder to pay attention to lung health. It's a time for communities, healthcare workers, and policymakers to educate the public about prevention and management.
Simple steps, such as avoiding smoking, reducing exposure to air pollutants, staying physically active, and following prescribed treatments, can improve quality of life and even save lives.
